She Dropped Me The Bomb

Deton8 Sugar Free

A lot of chain stores are trying to cash in on the energy drink craze. Some are good and some are bad. Kroger(the largest grocery retailer in the USA) usually has good store brand products. I am happy to see they have their own energy drinks now called Deton8. It’s at a bargain price so I’m hoping it is good as well.

Packaging: Deton8 comes in your usual 16 oz aluminum can. The can has a light blue, silver, and black color pattern on it. At the top of the can it reads “Sugar free” in a nice high tech looking font. It the middle is the logo which is the word Deton with a large 8 behind it. Behind the logo the pattern is like an explosion that reminds me of an exploding star or something in space. Below the logo is the phrase “Energy Drink” in a black and blue font. The phrase is so small and hard to see that I almost missed it. I think they should have used a different font and color. People might not notice this is an energy drink.  Nutrition facts on the back including caffeine amount.  Grade C- for packaging.  It’s not the worse I have seen but it just does not seem to de designed well and just does not grab you. I like the explosion pattern and the fact that it list caffeine amount.

Slogan: None on the can and no information on the web to be found. Grade F for slogan

Taste:  Popping the top right away you know “Red Bull Clone” as the scent hits you. Pouring some in a glass it comes out kind of golden but the turns to more of a caramel color. It has a pretty heavy carbonation. I take a sip and it’s not a bad RB clone and it taste of the usual apple grape mixture. The gumminess is not over the top and the artificial sweetener taste is not a bad one. It’s sweetened with a blend of sucralose(splenda) and Ace K instead of just one sweetener and this is a good mix. The carbonation last and last and makes it more soda like than a lot of RB clones. I give them a grade of C- for taste. Not bad really if you like sugar free red bull you will probably like this.

Kick/Ingredients:  Because of the carbonation I found it to go well with food and I had mine with a bag of Doritos as an afternoon snack. I got a decent buzz that laste 3 or so hours with no real crash. The energy ingredients in here are 152 mg of caffeine, 1920 mg of Taurine, 70 mg of inositol, and fair amounts of B vitamins. You get 30 calories and no sugar along with 2 grams of carbs and 2 grams of protein. Overall fairly average and it gets a grade of C- for kick/ingredients

Web Presence: Nothing at all to be found anywhere. Grade F for web presence

Recap:

Most of the time you can I can pick these up 4 for 5 dollars at my local Kroger’s so they are a bargain. If you’re having a big party and want to save money these would work nicely in Jager bombs and no one would probably notice the difference. This is a totally average energy drink except for the sub par can and lack of a website and slogan. Average average average.  The boost is ok and the taste is ok so go ahead and give it a try I say. In these tough economic times you can always use an extra buck.
